Submission Guidelines!

:eager:
General (original) Folders
For all the “standard” maille pieces!

Photo Quality
:bulletpink:The photo should be decent. The lighting should be good, and it shouldn't be blurry - to show off the details of the maille.
:bulletpink:Even if the piece is beautiful, if the photo is so/so, it makes it less impressive.

Chainmaille Content
:bulletpink:The focus of the photo should be on chainmaille.

Chainmaille Quality
:bulletpink:The "maille" should actually be a weave; no 1-1-1-1-1 chains.
:bulletpink:If the weave is your own design, that's fine, but it should look like a weave and not like a random jumble of rings.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Process/Materials Folder
For showcasing your materials as well as your workspace, and anything related to that!

Photo Quality
:bulletpink:The photo should be decent. The lighting should be good, and it shouldn't be blurry.
:bulletpink:A so/so photo makes for a less impressive display of your space.

Chainmaille Content
:bulletpink:Since this is a chainmaille group, we need to keep our Gallery maille-centric.
:bulletpink:Images should be specific to elements of your maille pieces, not supplies for beading, sewing, wire wrapping or other crafts.
:bulletpink:If you use elements from other crafts along with your maille, try to include an example of the integration in the piece (such as a bead & maille piece in the background of the photo showing off your bead collection).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Maille Elements Folder
For when maille isn’t the star of the show! (but it’s like, the lead stagehand or something.)

Photo Quality
:bulletpink:The photo should be decent. The lighting should be good, and it shouldn't be blurry - to show off the details of the maille.
:bulletpink:Even if the piece is beautiful, if the photo is so/so, it makes it less impressive.

Chainmaille Content
:bulletpink:This folder is specifically for pieces that don’t focus on maille – where there is another focal point such as a pendant. Maille DOES have to be used SOMEWHERE in the piece to be included in this group.

Chainmaille Quality
:bulletpink:The "maille" part of the piece should actually be a weave; no 1-1-1-1-1 chains.
:bulletpink:If the weave is your own design, that's fine, but it should look like a weave and not like a random jumble of rings.

Hi Ladies,

Jodey (:iconfemailleturtle:) here. I wanted to write a quick journal to let you know about an update to our policies, as well as some reminders about our policies.

UPDATE:
~from this point forward, the FEATURED folder is closed to new submissions. Instead of members being able to submit to that folder, the Admins will be choosing work from our members' submissions to other group folders to put into FEATURED. If you have a submission that you think represents your best work, please feel free to note one of us and let us know!

REMINDERS:
I'm going to give the submission guidelines for each folder in this section, so please read this carefully before submitting your deviations.

First and foremost, it is imperative that your photos be clear, well lit and show off your work well! Why? Because we want people who come to view your art to be able to see what you have made! There's no sense in doing all that work (and we all know maille is time-consuming!) to make something amazing and then having a crappy photo. If we receive a submission that has a poor photo, we will decline it with a comment requesting you re-submit with a better photo.

Secondly, please remember that we do not accept anything made with single (1-1-1-1-1) or double (2-2-2-2-2) cable, with the possible exception of you having made a maille pendant and it's hanging on single/double. If you submit something that is, for instance, single cable with beads hanging off it it, it will be declined.

On to the folders....

FEATURED: this is where we showcase your best pieces! There will be one piece per member in this folder. While we have closed the folder to new submissions, remember that if you have a submission that you think represents your best work, you can note an Admin and we can add it to FEATURED for you.

ARMOR and CLOTHING: pretty self explanatory; this folder is for armor and clothing made from maille (bras/bikinis, halters, panties, shirts, etc). If your submission is made from scale maille or is primarily constructed of scales, please submit it to the SCALES folder.

BRACELETS, CUFFS, WATCHES, etc: again, pretty self explanatory; this folder is for bracelets, cuffs, watches and things that go around your wrist, but are not bracers or armor-type things. Hand flowers ARE appropriate to submit to this folder.

EARRINGS, EAR CUFFS, etc: this folder is for things that are designed to be worn on the ears, so ear cuffs and earrings (whether pierced or clip) are appropriate.

MAILLE ELEMENTS: a folder for all things that don't have maille as the focus, but do have maille as a support to the focus. For instance, using a handmade chainmaille chain to put a non-maille pendant on.

NECKLACES, PENDANTS, CHOKERS, etc: a place for all things that are meant to adorn the neckline. So if you have a maille pendant, it is absolutely appropriate to submit it to this folder.

OTHER - RINGS, KEYCHAINS, etc: if it doesn't seem to fit in another category, submit it here!

PROCESS & MATERIALS: Process and Materials is a place to showcase your ...well, process and.....materials!  (:  Show us your workspace, your materials used, method of preparing materials, method of shooting your photos, whatever!

SCALE WORK: Scale work is a folder in which you should submit art that is made primarily of scales. This includes any jewelry items that are made of scales, clothing made of scales....anything that is primarily made of scales. So if you have a necklace that is made of HP4-1 and is decorated with a few scales, submit it to necklaces. If you have a necklace that is made of all scales, with no additional discernible maille weave, place it here. Our general rule (yes, there may be some exceptions...we are still evolving as a group!) is that we will not accept anything that is scales hung on 1-1-1-1 or 2-2-2-2.

SCULPTURE: another self explanatory folder! If you make maille sculpture, submit it to this folder.

TUTORIALS and HELP: We LOVE tutorials and other helpful things! If you have made a tutorial and want to share it, or inlay patterns, please submit them to this folder.

A final note...when :iconarmoredkoi: or I give suggestions or decline a photo for a particular reason, please know that we are doing it in the vein of trying to help. We make maille too, so we know how much of ourselves goes into each piece we make, and how long it can take to make that incredible piece! So if you have a question or don't understand a comment we've made, ask us about it.

If anyone has suggestions for the Admins on how to make this group better or run more smoothly, please note one of us.

Thanks for your time!
Jodey

Does anyone here have experience using GIMP and POV-Ray for making inlays? I'm trying to follow the directions posted here but I keep getting stuck at this part: "For "File in" browse for the image you created earlier. Leave the info for "File out" alone. Input whatever ring data you have for the rings you'll be making the inlay from for ring parameters. Select "Right Way" for stretch." For some reason, none of my images (no matter the file type) show up when I browse for the File in. If anyone knows how to fix this, or knows of a simpler software or other method I can use, please let me know. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have a question for you ladies... I want to make a hackey sack ball but I have read that some people like to fill them with fabric and some like to use plastic BB's. Which works better?

I thought about doing this as well, I decided that if I ever did it, I would use an actual hackey sack and just surround it in maille. Plastic BB's would be ideal because of the weight and how they behave when kicked. But they might fall through the rings, depending on the weave/AR used. Hope this helps (:

Thanks! I am concerned about the balls falling thru the rings. I will have to see what sizes they come in.
